As Michael Scott of “The Office” said, we live in an “increasingly paperless world.” And in such a world, many people have moved from the traditional form of writing down thoughts, ideas, and musings in a notebook, into an app instead. One of the most popular note-taking apps, Evernote, has thrived on this transition. But unlike similar apps, Evernote is also making an active effort to keep physical notebooks alive.
Last week, at the Evernote Trunk Conference, the company announced its partnership with Moleskine that combines analog notebooks with their digital counterparts like never before. This partnership manifests itself in two very different, but connected ways. The first is the Evernote Smart Notebook made by Moleskine. The smart notebook was specifically designed to work in tandem with the union’s second manifestation, the Evernote application.
The application, which has pioneered note taking and writing on mobile devices, was updated with a new feature called Page Camera. This new feature is designed to do exactly like it’s name suggests–take pictures of pages. Here’s what it looks like:
You’re probably thinking, I can just take pictures of any notebook with my smartphone’s camera and it’d be the same, right? That’s only partially correct. What makes the new Evernote-Moleskine notebook “smart” is that everything on the page (minus the ink) was designed to be moved into the digital space. The lines were designed to help the app automatically orient the page correctly so that you’re not looking at a crooked picture. It even comes with specially-designed stickers that the app recognizes and then tags appropriately.

As someone who still enjoys the act of writing with a pen (or pencil) and paper, I am very excited for the Evernote Smart Notebook by Moleskine. This unexpected partnerships offers people the chance to do something that wasn’t really possible before, and that’s to digitally back up their physical notes.
